My Favorite Things

Here are some of my favorite resources that have helped me get to where I am - and now I'm sharing them with you!
Books
by...me!  and a bunch of other cool people.
This book contains amazing stories from 19 different women.  We've written about some of the hardest times in our lives and how we found joy and light in the midst of those situations.

by Dr. Kristin Neff, Ph. D.
My therapist recommended this book to me, and it has been so helpful!  I understand better how to give myself grace and compassion as I continue to heal.
by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, M.D.
I read this book in grad school and my mind. was. blown.  Not only does it explain how our bodies can hold on to trauma, but it also offers some ways to heal your body and mind.

by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend
This is another book that comes recommended from my therapist.  It's awesome at explaining what boundaries are and how to set and keep them.
Physical Health
My cardiologist recommended this device to monitor my heart rate while I'm exercising to make sure that it was getting into the right target zone--but not too high!  You can connect it via bluetooth to your smart phone.  POLAR has an app, but I just connected it to the Health app that come standard on the iPhone.

Mental Health
This website has a "Find a Therapist" feature that I recommend to anyone looking to get in touch with a mental health professional.  You can search by ZIP code, areas of speciality, even insurance company!  Just click on the Find a Therapist button at the top of the page to get started.

I found these guided meditations from Belleruth Naparstek after my surgery, but I so wish I had found them before!  I did use them afterwards and they did wonders for calming my mind.  She has a TON of guided meditations for all kinds of issues, but I think the most relevant ones for heart patients would be the guided meditations to promote successful surgery, to ease pain, and to reduce anxiety and panic.
